SATANIC
PANIC
by Jonathan Dolhenty, Ph.D.
USA Today reports that a study of 12,000
reported cases of child abuse found no evidence
that satanic cults ritually abused or killed
children. The federally funded study casts serious
doubts on stories of people who draw on "recovered
memories" to help convict people of such abuse.
The study, done by the University of California
at Davis, was the first national attempt to measure
cases of ritual abuse, a phenomenon some have said
is a growing problem in the United States.
Bette Bottoms, co-author of the report, said a
bigger problem is abuse by parents with
conventional religious beliefs. She said: "Our data
indicate that more abuse is occurring in the name
of God than in the name of Satan."
I have pointed out before that there is an
organized effort on the part of the Psychological
Industry to promote this nonsense about massive
Satanic ritual child abuse.
While recognizing that now and then there is a
case to be made in a particular situation for such
ritual abuse, we have maintained that in very few
cases is there any objective evidence for the
alleged crime. The Repressed Memory Syndrome exists
in the mind of the creators of the phenomenon and,
so far at least, there is not a single bit of
scientific evidence it exists.
There are, however, an increasing number of
innocent citizens being sent to prison on the basis
of this subjective testimony. And the so-called
therapists, of course, make money and national
reputations.
