David Hume (1711-1776) was the great Scotch empirical skeptic who influenced the critical thinking of Immanuel Kant. Hume is empirical -- our knowledge has its sources in experience, and knowledge is limited to the world of phenomena. We can know nothing of ultimates, substances, causes, soul, ego, or the universe.
